Technology and I: A (Very) Tenuous Relationship
Technology and I have a... let’s call it “complicated” relationship. (My family would probably use stronger words.) Honestly, I can’t even label it a love/hate relationship—because there’s not much love there yet.
Over the years, I’ve spent a lot of time reflecting on why technology and I just don’t vibe. And here’s what I’ve uncovered so far:
I don’t understand my devices. I hate not understanding something. You’d think that not caring about the latest gadgets would make me care less about not understanding them. Spoiler alert: it does NOT.
I feel totally powerless. And, wow, do I hate feeling powerless.
I’m often in major resistance. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that resistance = suffering. And the more we resist, the more firmly things stay stuck in place.
So, when my tech decided to stage a full-scale rebellion over the past few weeks (I’m talking laptop, phone, website, email—everything), let’s just say I had a lot of feelings.
But here’s the thing: I weathered the storm way better than I would have a year ago. And that’s thanks to the tools I’ve been learning and practicing. Here’s what this experience taught me:
A. It’s ok to be humble. It’s ok not to know everything.
B. It’s ok to lean on others completely for help. (Admittedly, not my favorite thing.) The Universe has my back, and it’s actually a good thing to let others share their gifts with me. Receiving their help is part of the process.
C. One day at a time. This too shall pass. Just keep swimming.
So, that’s my plan: keep swimming. Keep learning. Keep leaning into the discomfort when technology throws me curveballs.
Who’s with me? Let’s just keep swimming, my friends. We’ve got this.
Shine Bright,
Alyssa
